When the kiddos aren’t picture perfect
My kids are getting older, and I say this all the time…I hate it. I literally look at how many years are left until they turn 18, and with my older one - we’re more than half-way there.
As they get older, they not only become more set in their ways, but also have a clear opinion on whether or not they want their picture taken. Going into my third year of a photo-a-day 365 project, this year has been easier as I have more experience behind the lens, yet harder because of my subjects. It’s finding a balance of telling a story, and keeping the image natural, while respecting their wishes on when and where the photograph is taken.
While my kiddos have grown accustomed to having a camera on me. It’s not just events, it’s our daily activities including trips to Costco and walks on the path. It’s carpooling to dance or capturing my daughter with her camera and point of view. You never know when you’ll have a moment. I used to apologize to bystanders when I’d take out my camera at the most random place…say the dairy section at Kroger, or while my son is rinsing off after swim lessons. Now, I don’t. I may share what I am doing, and their usual response is that it’s pretty cool. And when my kids look back at their photos? They love seeing our family adventures…which is what I remind them of when they pushback on getting their picture taken:)
My goals is not only to always be ready, but position the camera so it’s a natural complement to what we’re doing. In some cases, there are instances when my kids don’t even notice that their picture is being taken…and that is how I know I’ve been successful.
Cheers to year three of a photo-a-day, and telling the story of a ten and six year old.
xoxoxo,
Jen
